No evidence that dogs and cats can infect people with COVID-19

The outbreak of COVID-19 virus is not transferable to our pets. Additionally, there is no scientific evidence that dogs and cats can infect people. Should you need reassurance, regular veterinary updates are available through the Australian Veterinary Association. 

It is true that household pets have their own corona-viruses, and while the infections can be severe in animals, they have not been shown to spread to humans.

The primary source of COVID-19 transmission still remains the human-to-human contact. At present, there is no evidence that our household pets such as dogs and cats can be infected with COVID-19.

However,  it is always a good idea to wash your hands with soap and water after contact with pets. This protects you against various common bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella that can pass between pets and humans. It is also a timely reminder to wash pet-bedding regularly for general cleanliness.  Additionally store your pets food in an appropriate place.

This is the moment to apply the things we can do to keep ourselves, each other and the community as safe and well as possible during these challenging times.
